About WebCT
WebCT, which stands for Web Course Tools, is the online course management system used at UConn. WebCT is used for a fully online course, but most instructors use WebCT in conjuction with a face-to-face course taught on campus. Instructors customize their WebCT course sites by posting class materials and choosing which WebCT tools to use. Some of the tools used most frequently are the Discussion tool, the My Grades tool, and the Calendar tool. Some instructors also take advantage of the Quiz and Survey tool, the Assignment tool and the Mail tool. A brief description of each of these tools in included below.

  Discussion tool
Allows for threaded discussion. Messages are posted by topic area. Attachments are possible.

  My Grades tool
Allows individual students to see their grades. For this to occur, the instructor must enter grades into the WebCT "gradebook" and release them for viewing.

  Calendar tool
Can access items posted by the instructor for the whole class. Can add postings that are only seen by the student making the entry.

  Quiz & Survey tool
WebCT Surveys are anonymous. The instructor will know if you answered the survey but not what your answers were.

WebCT Quizzes can include multiple choice, true-false, matching, short answer, and paragraph questions. Depending on the settings applied my the instructor, it may be possible to get your score and also see what questions you got wrong.

  Assignment tool
Allows for the online submission of completed assignments.

  Mail tool
A basic email tool that is limited to use within WebCT. Each WebCT class site has its own mail tool. To see the mail for a class you must be logged into that class site. Once inside a WebCT class site, the mail tool can only be used to send mail to members of that particular class.

Additional help can be found within WebCT by clicking on the HELP link in the menu bar at the top of each page.

Login Help
NetIDs are used to log in to WebCT. Your NetID is also used to log in to Huskymail. The password is the same for both. If you have forgotten your NetID or need to reset your password, go to netid.uconn.edu.

Be sure to type your NetID in all lowercase letters.

If you do not see your course listed on your "My WebCT" page when you log in to WebCT, check with your instructor to be sure that the course is up. If it is, your instructor will need to check to see that your name and correct NetID appears in the "Manage Student Table" for that course.

Browser Help
For WebCT to function properly, the correct browser settings are needed. To determine if your browser is configured correctly, go to the Browser tuneup tool

Pop-up blockers cause significant problems with WebCT, especially with the Discussion tool and the Quiz tool. It is important to be sure ALL of the pop-up blockers are disabled. This includes blockers inside the browsers as well as blockers that are part of your seccurity software. View detailed instructions on disabling pop-up blockers.

ECR Help
ECR stands for Electronic Course Reserve. If an instructor chooses to use ECR, the materials are accessed through WebCT by clicking on the ECR link. The ECR readings are posted as pdf documents. If your instructor has informed you that readings will be posted on ECR and you do not see them when you click on the ECR link inside of your WebCT class site, it may be that they have not been posted yet by the library or that your browser is not configured properly. The version of Adobe Acrobat reader can also be a factor. See this page on the library's web site for Acrobat help.

I can't see the grade posted by the instructor
If the grade does not appear when you click on the link to the My Grades tool it is probably due to the fact that the instructor has not "released the column".

The ECR articles don't open when I click on the links.
May be due to the version of Adobe Acrobat reader on your computer. Try downloading the newest version - Adobe Reader 7.0.

I don't see my course listed when I log in to WebCT
Your instructor may not have requested the course site yet or it may not be posted yet. If the course is up and your classmates have access, check with the instructor to see that your name and NetID are listed properly in the WebCT "Manage Student" table.
